Wit by Margaret Edson is the kind of theatrical experience of which legends are made. It is neither too intellectual nor too maudlin, the play strikes a chord with its audiences. Every once in a while a play comes along that bonds people together in extraordinary ways—this is one of those plays. It isn’t a tearful lecture on how to die; it’s a dry-eyed lesson on how to live—with simplicity and kindness. To say Wit is about cancer is misleading; it is really about finding a balance between head and heart. It is at once funny, sad, tragic and life-affirming, complex and simple—yes, it is a rich and resonant piece of writing. The play is about death and dying, but what seems to have impressed audiences is the lesson the play presents for the living. |
